What to Bring (and Not Bring) to a Hospital Visit
The instinct to show up with something is a good one. The instinct to show up with a lot of things, right away, is one worth resisting.
New parents in those first 48 hours are running on very little sleep and a lot of visitors. The kindest gifts are the ones that require nothing from them: something they can open one-handed, something that doesn't need assembly, something that isn't perishable and urgent.
If there's an older sibling at home, consider splitting your gift in two: something small for the visit itself, and something for the sibling to open at home, on their own turf, without an audience of cooing relatives. It gives them a moment that's theirs.
And if in doubt: bring coffee for the parents, and nothing that needs to be washed, charged, or assembled before it can be used.
