Helping an Older Sibling Bond in the First Weeks
April 9, 2026·5 min read
'Big helper' is a nice phrase, but it isn't a job. Kids bond with a new sibling faster when they have something specific and repeatable to do: picking the pajamas, choosing the bedtime song, being the one who says goodnight first.
Matching items help too, in a low-key way. A pair of bears, sized differently, or two blankets in the same fabric, give a subtle signal: you two are a set now, not a hierarchy.
It's also worth giving the sibling permission to have mixed feelings out loud. A simple journal or a few open-ended prompts can do more for a rocky adjustment period than any pep talk.
